  • Title: The Three Highlights
Descriptive info: Unspoiled landscapes, magnificent medieval towns set in midst of sparsely populated countryside, villages where the age-old rhythms of life still continue, country roads where farm animals and horsedrawn carts are still a common sight, and motor cars few and far between, hospitable and friendly local people, and excellent value for money - no wonder Eastern Europe is so attractive to cycle tourists! This is true of Southern Poland, but it could be a description of many other East European holiday areas - from Estonia to Slovenia.. What is it that makes Southern Poland different? Why is this region, once part of the Kingdom of Galicia , worth exploring on two wheels? Here are a few reasons.. The.. three highlights:.. Krakow:.. One of the most beautiful cities of Eastern Europe, Krakow was once Poland's capital and is now the country's biggest visitor attraction - but most Westerners have yet to discover Krakow and its many delights.. With an ancient university, the city has a large student population and exciting cultural life.. The medieval town centre, with its many bars in the streets around the main square, is still very much alive.. All the main historic sights are so close together that it takes only a few minutes to get from one to another - by bike, of course! Old-fashioned, elegant town bicycles are the vehicles of choice for Krakow's bohemians.. The many ecological organisations based here do much to foster environment-friendly transport in the city.. Rural Galicia:.. Poland is the  ...   the road.. Linear villages strung out along the road with a strongly agricultural character were predominant.. We cycled through an impressive, open landscape of forests and meadows.. Cycle route through the Dunajec Gorge:.. This is simply a must.. Three cyclists who followed this route in 2001 wrote of the experience: While the raft trip through the Dunajec Gorge is a favourite with tourists, the route through the gorge is also a real treat for us cyclists, since from Cerveny Klastor (Red Monastery) there is a spectacularly beautiful cycle path running alongside the river Dunajec.. The monastery was founded by German Carthusian monks in the fourteenth century who also made the riverside path which we used.. The cliff walls of the gorge, in places only about 100 metres apart, rise to a height of 300 metres.. It is amazing that such a unique place is so little known! The Dunajec here marks the border between Poland and Slovakia, and for part of the way the cycle path runs on the Slovakian side.. In the new, united Europe this is no longer a problem, but for decades it was simply impossible to cycle along the river, until new border crossings for walkers and cyclists were opened in 1990.. At first only Slovaks and Poles were permitted to use these crossing, but a few years ago they were also opened to EU citizens.. Moreover, on 2006 a suspended wooden bridge for cyclists and pedestrians was constructed above the river, joining Poland in Slovakia..

  • Title: Dunajec cycle path
Descriptive info: Krakow and the Dunajec cycle path.. This is a classic tour organized every week from May to October and our most popular tour.. Many of the most beautiful cycle paths run along river valleys flanked by mountains and hills.. These rides, parallel to foaming river waters, are gentle and pleasant and it is not surprising that every year thousands of cyclists follow cycle routes along the Mosel, the Rhine or the Danube.. Similar routes can be found in other Alpine countries as well - but are there any in Poland? The answer to that is a resounding 'Yes!' One of these rides follows a spectacular route along the river Dunajec, from Podhale (the plateau at the foot of the High Tatras) to the towns of Stary Sacz and Nowy Sacz - an adventure you can now experience for yourself.. You may have heard of the Dunajec raft trips, one of the earliest attractions in Europe to be organised especially for tourists.. The famous, deep gorge of this river forms a natural border between Poland and Slovakia.. Following the cessation of border controls a few years ago and with the building of a new suspension bridge this natural wonder finally became accessible to cyclists as well.. Other stretches of the Dunajec valley have paths that are just as beautiful taking you past the folk traditions of the Goral and Spisz people.. We invite you to a week-long tour, beginning and ending on a Saturday, with the first and last nights spent in Krakow and five nights in villages and towns in the mountains.. more photos.. Day 1th.. (Saturday).. You arrive in Krakow and spend the first night in a three-star hotel in the Old Town.. After finding your room, there is time for a stroll through Krakow and for a first impression of the Old Town and its nightlife.. Day 2th.. (Sunday).. Krakow - Zab - Zakopane.. 25-30 km.. cycling.. Bikes are selected at our cycle hire centre in the middle of the Old Town our tour of Krakow, a former capital of Poland gets underway.. The city that was once the residence of Polish kings is on the UNESCO World Heritage list and boasts a historic architecture which came through the Second World War unscathed.. Among Krakow's most important architectural treasures are St Mary's Church with the world-famous altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss; medieval buildings of Jagiellonian University, Poland's oldest university; Wawel Cathedral adjacent to the 11th century Wawel Castle; Europe's largest medieval town square; Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter; the promenade along the Vistula at the foot of Wawel Castle.. On our cycle tour we visit the Planty , attractive gardens laid out around the Old Town on the site of the earlier medieval city walls.. At about midday a minibus takes us to Podhale.. Our destination is the village of Zab, Poland's highest village.. The journey takes about 2 hours.. The first ride will be to Gubalowka, from where we can enjoy a panoramic view of the High Tatras.. We then cycle down the mountain, past farm carts laden with hay.. After a short rest at the point where the Poroniec and Zakopianka streams join the White Dunajec, we ride through the village of Olcza to Zakopane.. Our accommodation here is not far from Krupowki, Zakopane's main street, a pedestrian area lined with lively cafés and shops.. Zakopane has developed a very distinctive cultural character.. The folk culture of the people who live in the Tatras, the Gorale, has been preserved in their music, their songs and their local costume.. And the characteristic Zakopane style of timber architecture, which developed around the turn of the twentieth century, can be found nowhere else in Europe.. During our break we can sample oscypek , the delicious smoked ewe's-milk cheese made in the Goral houses here.. D.. ay 3th.. (Monday).. Zakopane - Nowy Targ.. 46 km cycling, mostly downhill.. We take the cable car back to the top of Gubalowka and then cycle down through the village of Dzianisz as far as Chocholow, a village which is now a living open-air museum of timber architecture, where we have lunch in the village inn.. Following a short climb we enter the valley of Cichy Potok ( the quiet stream ) and continue further downhill along a quiet path, through Ciche, Stare Bystre, Ludzmierz (with a famous  ...   a little shopping here before it's time to head back into Poland.. The little spa town of Szczawnica is a pleasant surprise, with its cycle-friendly separate lanes for cyclists.. In the afternoon we ride along the elegant promenade in the valley of the Grajcarek and explore the paths in the upper and lower spa gardens.. Day 6th.. (Thursday).. Szczawnica - Rytro.. 55 km cycling.. The stretch today leads us through what is known as the green Dunajec Gorge , where the river passes between two ranges of the Beskids.. Although there are no limestone cliff walls here, the slopes with their beech woods are still very impressive.. We soon leave the main road, crossing the river on a suspension bridge to the right bank and making our way between the paths among the farms of the village of Tylmanowa with glimpses of the old barns, granaries and hen-houses though open doors.. We stop for lunch at a guesthouse in Lacko, known for its strong slivovitz, a plum brandy.. It is also possible to halt alongside fruit gardens on the valley slopes.. At Golkowice we leave the Dunajec and ride to Rytro, an old feudal village at the foot of castle ruins.. On our last evening we have a dinner with grilled trout fresh from the river.. Day 7th.. (Friday).. Rytro - Krakow.. 15-25 km cycling.. After breakfast we take a 15 km ride through the Poprad Valley to Stary Sacz, although yo may prolongate the tour and cycle upstream the river to spa town Piwniczna.. Early afternoon is spent exploring Stary Sacz - the historic little town, one of the most beautiful in southern Poland, cycling through the maze of narrow streets for a feel of the atmosphere of past times.. After lunch we return to Krakow (bus journey about 2 hours).. Our accommodation for the last night is usually in the same hotel as on the first night, but we will spend the rest of the day in the quiet Kazimierz district, once the Jewish quarter of the city.. An evening of Klezmer music brings the tour to a close.. Day 8 (Saturday).. If desired you can extend your stay in Krakow or take part in other tours such as.. Steppes and Marshes.. or.. See more pictures here.. Tour profile:.. The entire tour is over flat or gently undulating terrain.. The climbs are no problem even for less adept cyclists or children.. • Title: Krakow - Warsaw
Descriptive info: Pilica cycle route.. New for 2014:.. Undiscovered cycling and canoeing experience in the lush green heart of Poland.. between Krakow and Warsaw.. PI.. cturesque,.. L.. ush,.. I.. dyllic,.. CA.. ptivating: PILICA (read: peeleetsa).. A 300 km long river which originates not far from Krakow and flows into the Vistula shortly before Warsaw.. Somewhat like the Weser in Germany or Loire in France, the Pilica flows through the middle of Poland, far away from large cities and industrial areas.. Wild, with numerous islands, sandy banks and meanders, the river snakes through forests, riparian meadows, small famlands and orchards.. The countryside is predominantly flat.. Ten years after Poland entered the EU there is an as yet relatively unknown treasure waiting for cycle tourists to discover it.. A dense network of what was earlier sandy or stony small country roads has now been newly paved and the smooth asphalt roads with minimal traffic are perfect for cycling.. And ten years after advertising the Dunajec Cycle Path as Poland's cycling destination we now recommend the Pilica Cycle Path as a very simple week-long cycle tour that starts in Krakow and ends in Warka near Warsaw.. This tour can be easily combined with our other week-long cycling and hiking modules (Dunajec, Masuria and Sudeten).. On the way one can - after cycling - get a different perspective of the river from a canoe.. more pictures.. Day 1.. Arrival in Krakow.. Arrival in Krakow and first overnight stay at a centrally located hotel.. After finding your room there is time to stroll through Krakow for a first impression of its historic city center and famous nightlife.. Day 2.. (Sunday).. Pilica-Source - Zawada.. ca 30-40 km cycling.. After the bus ride to Smolen, which takes barely an hour, we get on the cycles on a hill with medieval castle ruins.. The first kilometers are downhill through Jura landscapes towards the source of the river.. We ride further past fish ponds, through a pretty town, with the same name as the river - Pilica - to our accomodation at Zawada.. Day 3.. (Monday).. Zawada - Przedborz.. ca 65 km cycling.. The flat and quiet roads run through shady forests for the most part and you will scarcely notice the kilometers flying by.. This leg is the longest and ends in the small town of Przedbórz which is next to Przedbórz Landscape Park.. Day 4.. Przedborz - Sulejow.. ca 40 km cycling.. Once more we pass through tree-lined avenues, narrow fields and fragrant meadows and even gardens in full bloom until we come to a very special accomodation.. Our hotel was once a Cistercian abbey built on the extensive grounds of a castle from the Middle Ages.. Day 5.. Sulejów - Spala.. ca 45 km cycling.. For this leg of our journey we first go past the reservoir with  ...   on the 30 - 40 km round-trip to Vistula valley and the Pilica mouth.. Lodgings:.. Hotels und guesthouses.. Ranging from good two-star standard (guesthouse in Przedbórz) to a four-star hotel in Warka.. These accomodations mostly have much charm, are well kept and often located close to the river.. Canoeing.. The Pilica is a particular favourite among canoeists.. There are numerous rental outlets on the way.. After checking in at the hotel it is possible in every locality in the middle and lower course of the river (Przedbórz, Sulejów, Spa a, Nowe Miasto, Warka) to be taken a few kilometers upstream and to canoe back.. Often there are jettys right next to the hotel.. You may book these trips either in advance or decide on the spot to rent a canoe.. • Title: Masurian Lakeland
Descriptive info: The Masurian lake plateau was and remains one of Poland's most popular destinations for tourists on two wheels.. Not only natural beauty draws the tourist to this area with literally thousands of crystalline lakes, dreamy alleyways with trees that are centuries old and forested areas in their natural state.. The Masurian area is also of great historical interest.. It formed the Prussian province of East Prussia for some centuries.. This is where Teutonic Knights left their Gothic and Medieval castles and the Nazis their bunkers.. In fact it was here, in the famous 'Wolfschanze' (Wolf's Lair), that the fateful attempt to assassinate Hitler took place in the year 1944.. Masuria offers the cyclist predominantly flat land, side roads with few cars, a well developed tourist infrastructure and welcoming inhabitants - making it an appealing destination for individuals riding for pleasure.. Bird Service has an affordable tour for cyclists travelling alone.. Find an opportunity to take one of a number of fast trains or low-priced flights to Warsaw on a Saturday so that you can acquaint yourself with this fascinating area during a week of cycling before returning to Warsaw.. It is a relaxing tour allowing you to experience the many attractions of the area.. The overnight stays are at 5 different locations, there is a ship cruise and we also offer an optional canoe trip.. On one of the days it is possible to choose between routes of different lengths.. This package is compatible with our other weekly trips.. For example, if you book the weeklong Krakow and Dunajec Cycle Path or the Cycling in Silesia tour, you could go on to Warsaw for our Masurian-Ring cycle tour.. Day 1:.. Arrival in Warsaw.. , hotel registration.. Day 2:.. Warsaw - Babieta - Mragowo.. 31 km cycling.. You arrive at Babieta, a village on the banks of the river Krutynia, after a three hour car or minibus journey.. There will be a break for lunch and the bicycles will be handed out.. The first leg is short and ends in Mragowo, a resort with a historical town centre and a lakeside promenade.. Day 3:.. Mragowo - Ketrzyn.. You cycle through small villages and beautiful lakes to Reszel, in the historic region  ...   White Stork nests in the entire tour).. However, we would recommend the longer loop through Borecka forest.. This forested area has been left in its natural state and has a rich variety of plant life and is also home to the European bison and has a network of beautiful, car-free bicycle routes.. It is nature at its pristine best.. Day 6:.. Gizycko - Krutyn.. 40 km cycling.. Following a 3-hour long ship journey (included in the price) you land in Mikolajki, the St.. Tropez of Masuria with an idyllic and modern city centre, an attractive sailing port and old fishing houses.. This area sees a great deal of seasonal tourism.. An old fashioned rope ferry brings you to Popielno, a scientific breeding station for Tarpan horses.. Popielno is one of the few villages on the shores of Jezioro Sniardwy, Poland's largest lake.. Dark forest paths lead to the Russian Orthodox monastery in Wojnowo past the small but lively resort of Krutyn.. Day 7:.. Krutyn - Warsaw.. 10-20 km cycling or 2-3 hours canoeing.. You remain in Masuria the entire morning and can visit other tourist attractions in the area of Krutyn by bicycle (for example the Ernst Wiechert memorial) or you could take a highly recommended 3-hour long canoe ride on the most beautiful part of the river.. • Title: Cycling in Silesia
Descriptive info: This is a fascinating tour joining a high variety of nature and cultural heritage of Polish, Czech and German inhabitants who once lived in this area.. It leads along the Polish - Czech border that once divided the province of Silesia.. This cycle tour has become even more interesting ever since both countries joined the Schengen Agreement.. Many old roads have finally opened again and the attractions along the border are easy and quick to reach by cycle.. The course of the border itself is a quirk of history, cutting through the villages apparently at random as a result of an 18th century dispute between Frederick the Great of Prussia and Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.. It is not an accident that Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff, known as the greatest of the German Romantic poets, has been named patron of this tour.. He was born at Lubowice Palace at Raciborz and after many years abroad returned to Silesia shortly before his death.. The tour takes us along many historical buildings and memorials to the poet and his times.. (Saturday): Arrival in the Silesian capital of.. Wroclaw.. and accommodation in a centrally located hotel..
